Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles report 13.09.18
The opening round of the Ridley Lazer West Midlands Cyclo Cross League was held on the popular Redditch course hosted by Redditch Road & Path CC. Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles young rider Daniel Ward moved up an age group this year to the Under 12 a class which invariably has a good number of quality young riders taking part. 49 riders finished the race and Ward was on the front row of the grid. The spectators were treated to some fine close racing with only small time gaps covering the top riders. After a close race Ward crossed the line in seventh place a fine finish against a good number of older riders. Ryan Oldfield of the host club took the win. Local rider Christian Aucote ride in the Senior mens event with a mix of Seniors, V40 – V45 and Under 23 riders. He put in a good ride on an unconventional and uncompetitive cycle to finish in 22nd place out of the123 finishers. The winner was Under 23 rider Toby Barnes.
Leicestershire Cyclo League also staged its first event of the season at Marston Lodge, near Market Harborough. Under 14 rider Zak Machin of Lichfield City CC competed very strongly in a mixed field including Under 16’s. After a long hard race he finished in 6th place behind the winner Ben Marsh of Matlock CC.
Ben Startin of Mercia CC – Lloyds Cycles rode in the BDCA (Burton & Derby Cycling Association) 100 mile Time Trial held predominately on the A50 starting at Etwall. The strong winds and warm weather took its toll on a large number of riders with many riders having to withdraw after 50 – 60 miles. Startin paced himself well and finished in the excellent time of 4hrs 16minutes 23seconds. The winner was Adam Duggleby of Vive Le Velo in the time of 3hrs 29minutes 26 seconds, an average speed of over 28mph.
