Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles report 18.07.19.

Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles Under14 Youth rider Zak Machin rode in the last round of the West Midlands Road Race League at the Tudor Grange circuit in Solihull. The purpose built track was designed by an Olympic Road Race rider and the relatively short track features everything needed for exiting racing. The riders were bunched together with 12 laps remaining and it looked like it would stay that way with a bunched rider finish. However, Machin decided to make a break and stormed away from the rest of the field. Try as they might the other riders couldn’t catch him and he comfortably maintained a large gap to cross the finishing line unopposed.

Daniel Ward Mercia’s Under 12 rider rode at the same venue, he hasn’t ridden a road race for some time and the last minute arrival and lack of a warm up didn’t help. Despite trying hard he couldn’t challenge the leaders and crossed the line in the bunch in 13^th place.

Mercia CC- Lloyds Cycles Veteran Time Trial riders Ben Startin and Rob Gower took part in the Burton & District Cycling Alliance 50mile TT. Unusual and unexpectedly good conditions resulted in some excellent times. Gower narrowly beat his club mate when he recorded 1hour 55 minutes 23 seconds with Startin at 1:56:22. J Costello of Walsall Roads CC was first of the Alliance riders in 1:47:30 with the overall winner being J Schubert of Actic Aircon RT in 1:37:55. The Vive le Velo Tandem duo of A Duggleby & S Bate recorded a very fast 1:28:23. Several age records were also broken with most notably 84 year old Ron Hallam of South Pennine RC recording 2:18:57. A fine ride by anyone’s standard.

A very light wind and warm conditions made for near ideal conditions for the riders taking part in the Mercia evening 10mile TT. The fastest time was 23:19 recorded by Lee Aston of the Mercia club. Next home was Sean Sleigh of Born to Bike in 23:59. Other riders times, all Mercia CC- Lloyds Cycles UNO, were Zak Machin 24:35. (under 14 Youth rider, 3^rd on handicap). Erik Woronovich 25:00 Ben Startin 25:31. Jeff Slinn 26:22. Liam Mewis 27:26 (under 16 youth, 1^st on handicap). Simon Parker 27:27, (2^nd on handicap). Keith Staley 27:59. Tony Marlow 28:40. John Hulse 29:25. Adrian Waters 31:47. Dave Baines 33:23 and at one lap Dave Peters 19:07.
