Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles report 27.09.18

Round 2 of the Forme – Notts Derby Cyclo-Cross League took place at Chetwynd army barracks, Chilwell, hosted by Ilkeston CC. In contrast to the previous weeks race, the course was had longer grass and was quite bumpy in places. Two sand traps proved difficult in the later stages following a heavy rain shower midway through the event time table. Full fields in all classes proved the ever growing popularity of the sport.

In the Under 12 class Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles rider Daniel Ward had a great start and was in third place for two laps. A sticky patch in the middle of the race saw him slip down the leader board but he regained his form and finished in a creditable 7th place behind the winner, George Cooper of Sherwood Pines Cycles Forme.

Mercia’s Julie Tipper showed that she is learning the sport fast and her strong riding saw her gain a few places on previous weeks to take a great 2nd place in the Ladies V50 class beaten only by the very experienced Tracey Fletcher of Team Empella Cyclo-Cross.com.

In the Veteran men’s class another packed race saw some fast competitive riding. Pascal Arnoux of Zepnat.com RT Lazer Helmets rode his first race of the season in the V55 class and showed that he has kept full fitness over the summer by finishing in third place. The first three riders in this class crossed the line almost together which will make for some close and exciting racing over the season. Glenn Coltman of Pedal Power Loughborough took the win. Whilst not having the best of races, Adrian Waters of Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles finished in 1st place in the V70 event.

The following day had Daniel Ward riding Round three of the Ridley Lazer West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League event at Henley in Arden, Warwickshire hosted by Stratford CC. This course always provides a good challenge for the riders with a number of challenging sandy banks and this year was no exception. Wards well practiced technical skills and more consistent and better paced ride paid dividends for him crossing the line in 5th place beating several riders who had beaten him in previous races this season. George Cooper was again the winner.
