About Us
History
The Mercia Cycling Club was founded in 1965. However, its roots can be found many years before this. These three long established local clubs:
- Swadlincote Wheelers (founded in 1930)
- Rykneld Road Club (founded in 1946)
- Overseal Cycling and Athletic Club (founded in 1947)
…got together and decided that amalgamation was in their mutual interests, and also the best policy with regard to the future of cycling in the area of Burton-on-trent. Therefore, at the end of 1965, the Mercia Cycling Club was born and the first annual club dinner was held. Since 1965, the club has continued with great success with all aspects of cycling.
At the Mercia Cycling Club we cater for all kinds of cyclists. A club night is held every Tuesday evening at: Henhurst Hill Social Club, Henhurst Hill, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire DE13 9TB.
The racing season starts in April and ends in September. During the racing season, the Henhurst Hill Social Club is used as the head quarters for the club time-trial events held every Tuesday evening. In addition to the weekly time-trials, the Mercia Cycling Club also promotes races open to entries from all cyclists. The club has several experienced officials, with many years of organising events behind them.
